a. 上列句型中的much為代名詞, how much理論上是由how much money化簡而來 (money通常不須說出, 以免造成贅述), 此時的much則是形容詞, 專門用來修飾不可數名詞。
初學英文者可能搞不清楚什麼是可數名詞和不可數名詞, 我們現在先以money (金錢) 為例來說明什麼是不可數名詞:
money是不可數名詞, 但這並非指『錢』不能數, 『錢』當然可以數, 如: 一塊美元 (one dollar)、兩毛錢 (two dimes)、三分錢 (three cents) 等; 所謂『不可數』這三個字乃指money這個英文字本身不能數, 我們不能說『一個錢』 (one money)、『兩個錢』 (two moneys), 亦即money這個字沒有複數形。
譯: 你有多少錢？
How many moneys do you have? (╳)
→How much money do you have? (○)
我們再以paper (紙) 為例:
我們不能說『一紙』(a paper)、『兩紙』(two papers), 但可以說『一張紙』、『兩張紙』, 這時就要加上表示『張』的單位piece, 即"a piece of paper"、"two pieces of paper"。
water (水) 也是不可數名詞, 我們不能說『一水』(a water)、『兩水』(two waters), 但若加上單位, 如『一杯』、『兩杯』等, 這時就可以說『一杯水』(a glass of water)、『兩杯水』(two glasses of water)。
b. 所謂可數名詞就是該英文字本身可以數, 像book(書)、student (學生)等, 可以說one book/student (一本書/一個學生), two books/students (兩本書/兩個學生), 這時就不能用much修飾, 而要用many。
例: How much books do you have? (╳)
→How many books do you have? (○)
(你有多少本書？)
How much students are there in the room? (╳)
→How many students are there in the room? (○)
(房間裏有多少個學生？)
There are five books in the bag.
(袋子裏有五本書。)
There are fifty students in the classroom.
(教室裏有五十個學生。)
c. 上列句型中的cost表『價值(多少錢) 』, 使用這個字時, 不可以『人』作主詞, 因為如果我們說:
John costs ten dollars.
約翰價值十塊錢。
這句話的意思是說只要花十塊錢就可以買到約翰, 我想是沒有人會想要這麼做的。
因此, 使用cost時, 通常都以『物品』、『東西』等作主詞, 表示『(某物品/東西) 價值若干』。
例: The dress costs twenty dollars.
(那件洋裝要廿塊錢。)
我們也可以在cost之後接『人』, 再加金錢, 表示『花某人多少錢』的意思。
例: This hat may cost her thirty dollars.
(這頂帽子可能會花她三十塊錢。) |
