fire表『火』時, 是不可數名詞; 表『火災』時, 則為可數名詞, 可說a fire, two fires...。

例: Little Billy is afraid of fire.

　　(小比利怕火。)

　　A fire broke out in the downtown area yesterday.

　　(昨天在市區發生了一起火災。)

Come quick!　　快點來！

= Come quickly!

注意:　

quick原為形容詞, 表『快/迅速的』, 但在口語中, quick也可作副詞用, 等於quickly, 由於quick比quickly說起來較簡潔, 故在口語中常用quick代替quickly。

例: David is a quick walker. (quick作形容詞用)

　　(大衛走路很快。)

　　Come quick; something terrible has happened. (quick作副詞用)

　　(快來呀，發生可怕的事情啦。)

What's burning?　　什麼東西在燃燒/著火了？

此處的burning是動詞burn (燃燒) 的現在分詞。

be動詞 + 現在分詞　　正在……

例: The whole building is burning.

　 (整棟建築正在起火。)

　 John is writing a letter now.
