call  vt. 稱……為……

此處的call在文法中稱為不完全及物動詞; 換言之, call仍是及物動詞, 之後應接受詞, 但意思仍不完全, 故須置名詞於該受詞之後, 以補足句意的完整。該名詞稱為受詞補語。

例: They call the little girl... (╳, 句意不完整)

　(他們稱這小女孩為……)

　→ They call the little girl Mary. (○)

　(他們稱這小女孩為瑪麗。)

I am twenty years old.　　我二十歲。

a. 此類句子結構為:

人 + be動詞 + 數字 + year(s) + old　　某人幾歲了

例: My baby boy is one year old.

　(我的小寶貝一周歲了。)

　He is twenty-five years old.

　(他二十五歲。)

b. 在上列例句中的old亦可用of age取代。

He is twenty-five years old.

= He is twenty-five years of age.

c. 談到age還有一個很好的用法:

look young for one's age　　看起來比實際年紀年輕

= look younger than one really is

例: You look young for your age.

  　= You look younger than you really are.

　(你看起來比實際年紀要年輕。)

= I am a Chinese.

第一例中的Chinese是形容詞, 之前不置不定冠詞a; 第二例中的Chinese則作名詞, 之前須置a。

a. there置於句首, 之後接be動詞 (is, are) 時, 作『有』解。

句型如下:

      there is + 單數名詞 + 表示場所的介詞片語

       there are + 複數名詞 + 表示場所的介詞片語

例: There is a book on the desk.

　(桌上有一本書。)

　There are thirty students in my class.

　(我班上有卅個學生。)

b. there 一字則是副詞, 本意為『那裡』。

例: Put the book there.

　(把書放在那裡。)
