I have two friends. One is short, and the other is tall.

我有兩個朋友。一個是矮個子, 另一個是高個子。

注意下列代名詞的用法:

a. 兩者: one...the other...　　一個……另一個……

例: I have two brothers. One is a teacher, and the other is a soldier.

　(我有兩個哥哥。一個是老師，另一個是軍人。)

b. 三者: one...another...the other...　　一個……一個……另一個……

例: Her three sisters are busy now. One is cooking in the kitchen, another is fixing her bike in the yard, and the other is studying in the living room.

　(她的三個姐姐現在都很忙。一個正在廚房做飯，一個正在院子裡修她的自行車，另一個 則正在客廳裡看書。)

My short friend is fat, bald and ugly.

我那位矮個子朋友肥胖、禿頭、長得又醜。

上句中的and是對等連接詞,表示『和』、『以及』的意思, 連接fat、bald及ugly三個平行對等的形容詞。and可連接平行的單字、片語、子句或句子。

例: John and David are good friends.

注意:

a. and連接兩個平行單字時, and之前不得置逗點。

例: My friend is handsome, and intelligent. (╳)

　→ My friend is handsome and intelligent. (○)

　(我的朋友英俊又聰明。)

b. and連接三個平行單字時, 第一個單字與第二個單字之間置逗點, and則置於第二個單字與第三個單字之間, and之前則可置逗點, 但通常予以省略。

例: My friend is handsome, intelligent, and strong. (可)

　→ My friend is handsome, intelligent and   strong. (常用)

　(我的朋友英俊、聰明、身體又壯。)

c. and連接平行的句子時, and之前通常置一逗點; but亦為對等連接詞, 表示『但是』、『不過』的意思, 用來連接平行的句子時, but之前通常也置一逗點。

例:He loves Jane, and (he) is planning to   marry her this year.

　(他很愛珍，且正計劃今年要跟她結婚。)

　He likes music, but his girlfriend hates it.

　(他喜歡音樂，但他的女友討厭音樂。)

Oh, one more thing: my short friend is rich, but my tall friend is poor.

= Oh, there is one more thing: my short friend...
