在前面的課文中我們已提到形容詞的比較級及最高級的變化。本課則就形容詞的最高級使用時應注意事項提出說明如下 :
a. 形容詞的最高級應與定冠詞 the 並用 :
例：She is a most beautiful girl in her class. ( ╳ )
→She is the most beautiful girl in her class. ( ○ )
( 她是她班上最美麗的女孩子。 )
David is a best student in his school. ( ╳ )
→ David is the best student in his school. ( ○ )
( 大衛是他學校中最好的學生。 )
b. 含有比較級的句子結構中 , 有三個或三個以上的比較對象時 , 方可使用最高級 ; 若只有兩個對象相互比較時 , 只能使用比較級。
例：Of the three girls, she is the most beautiful .
( 這三個女孩子中，她是最美的。 )
Of the ten students, David is the best .
( 這十個學生中，大衛是最好的一個。 )
Of the two books, this one is the more interesting .
( 這兩本書中，這一本比較有趣。 )
Of the two teachers, John is the kinder .
( 這兩位老師中，約翰是比較仁慈的一位。 )
c. 在 b 項的例句中 , 均含有 "of the + 數字 + 名詞 " 的介詞片語 , 句中的形容詞不論是最高級或比較級 , 其前均冠以定冠詞 the 。且由於介詞片語已有名詞出現 , 形容詞的最高級或比較級之後相同的名詞就應省略。
例：Of the two boys, John is better . ( ╳ )
Of the two boys, John is the better boy .
( 劣 , boy 與boys 重複 )
→Of the two boys, John is the better . ( ○ )
( 這兩個男孩中，約翰比較好。 )
d. 上列 of 引導的介詞片語中 , 數字為 three ( 三 ) 或以上時 , of 可由 among ( 在……之中 ) 取代 , 但若為 two ( 二 ) 時 , 只能使用 of, 而不可使用 among 。
例：Of the five cars, the red one is the prettiest.
= Among the five cars, the red one is the prettiest.
( 這五輛汽車中，紅色的那一輛最漂亮。 )
Among the two cars, the red one is the prettier. ( ╳ )
→ Of the two cars, the red one is the prettier. ( ○ )
( 這兩輛汽車中，紅色的那一輛比較漂亮。 )
e. 形容詞的最高級與 the 之間可置數字 ( 如 two 、 three 等 ), 與複數名詞並用。
例：John and Mary are two best students in our class. ( ╳ )
→ John and Mary are the two best students in our class.
( ○ )
( 約翰和瑪麗是我們班上最好的兩個學生。 )
