以上兩句中的smoking均作及物動詞stop及enjoyed的受詞。下列及物動詞均須用動名詞作受詞:

注意:

　a. 有些及物動詞如like (喜歡), love (喜愛), hate (痛恨) 等, 可使用不定詞片語或動名詞作其受詞。

　　例: I like (或love) to work with him.

　　　　I like (或love) working with him.

　　　　(我喜歡跟他共事。)

　　　　I hate to tell lies.

　　　　I hate telling lies.

　　　　(我痛恨說謊。)

　b. stop smoking　　戒煙

　　=quit smoking

　　=give up smoking

　　例: I stopped smoking three years ago.

　　　　(我三年前就戒煙了。)

　　　　The chain smoker tried very hard to give up smoking, but he couldn't.

　　　　(這位癮君子拼命設法戒煙，但就是戒不掉。)

　c. stop可作及物動詞, 表示『停止從事……』的意思, 以動名詞作其受詞。但stop亦可作不及物動詞, 表示『停止』的意思, 之後接不定詞片詞, 表示『停止某件事, 而改做另一件事』的意思。即:

　　stop + 動名詞　　停止從事……

　　stop to + 動詞原形　　停下來開始……

　　例: John stopped talking to me when his father
　　　　walked in.

　(約翰的父親走進來時，約翰就把和我的談話打住了。)

　　　　John stopped to talk to me when he saw me.

　　　　(約翰看到我時，便停下來與我談話。)

He tried quitting several times.

　他嘗試戒了幾次。

try可接不定詞片語作其受詞, 此時try表示『設法要……』的意思。而在本句中, tried則以動名詞為其受詞, tried作『嘗試』解。茲將try的用法整理如下:

try to + 原形動詞　　設法要……

try + 名詞/動名詞　　嘗試/試試……

　例: I'll try to call you later today.

　　　(我今天晚一點會設法打電話給你。)
