注意:

not only...but also...為對等連接詞, 可用以連接對等的單字、片語或子句; 當其連接對等的主要子句時, not only之後的主要子句要採倒裝句構; 且but also在連接的主要子句中, also要省略, 或置於句中, 而不可在but also後直接接主要子句。倒裝原則如下:

a. 句中有be動詞時, 主詞與be動詞要倒裝。

例: Not only she is pretty, but also she is clever. (╳)

　→Not only is she pretty, but she is (also) clever. (○)

　= Not only is she pretty, but she is clever as well.

　(她不僅人長得漂亮，而且還很聰明。)

b. 句中有助動詞時, 主詞與助動詞倒裝。

例: Not only he can speak English, but also he can speak French. (╳)

　→Not only can he speak English, but he can (also) speak French. (○)

　= Not only can he speak English, but he can speak French as well.

　(他不僅會講英文，而且還會講法文。)

c. 句中為一般動詞時, 則先在主詞前按動詞時態及主詞人稱之不同, 分置do、does或did, 其後動詞則一律改用原形。

例: Not only I love her, but also I want to marry her. (╳)

　→Not only do I love her, but I (also) want to marry her. (○)

　= Not only do I love her, but I want to marry her as well.

　(我不僅愛她，而且還要娶她。)

上列句中的why是關係副詞, 其所引導的形容詞子句只用以修飾the reason (理由), 但使用時, 我們可將the reason省略, 保留why (如本句用法); 或將why省略, 而保留the reason; 但亦可兩者均保留。

例: Peter goes swimming early in the morning every day. That's why he is so healthy.

　= Peter goes swimming early in the morning every day. That's the reason he is so healthy.
