使用過去完成式的時機:
過去完成式乃表截至過去某時為止所完成的動作、經驗, 且過去完成式不能單獨存在, 而要與另一過去式子句或表過去之副詞片語並用, 即在過去不同時間所發生的兩種動作。
先發生的→用過去完成式

後發生的→用過去式

例: I lost the book which my father had given me.

　(我弄丟了父親給我的書。)

　He had studied Japanese for ten years before he left for
　Japan.

　(他赴日之前已學過十年日文。)

　She had already left when I came.

　(我來時她已離開了。)

　My friend told me that he had seen the movie twice.

　(我朋友告訴我說，那部電影他已經看過兩次了。)

注意:

但在文章中, 因承接上下文時態的關係, 故過去完成式可單獨存在。因此本文的"I had let the cat out of the bag, so to speak."與"I'd never been so embarrassed in my life."為過去完成式, 因承接上下文的時態, 故可單獨存在。

I had let the cat out of the bag, so to speak.

我可以說是無意中洩漏了祕密。

上列句中使用了so to speak (可以這麼說) 置於句尾的用法, 但so to speak亦常作插入語使用, 尤其是置於句中be動詞之後。

例: Aaron can swim like a fish, so to speak.

　(艾倫游泳可以說是游得和魚一樣好。)

　It seems David never does anything wrong. He is, so to
　speak, a saint.

　(大衛似乎從未做錯過事，他可以說是個聖人。)
