上列第一句中的boiling本為boil的現在分詞, 作形容詞用, 表『(正在) 沸騰/滾開的』, 但在此處卻作副詞用, 修飾其後的形容詞hot, 表『極炎熱地』之意; 而第二句中的dead亦本為形容詞, 表『(已) 死的』, 但在此處卻作副詞用, 表『全然地』之意, 修飾其後的形容詞wrong。

a. 少數現在分詞有副詞very的意味, 可修飾其後的形容詞。

b. 少數形容詞亦有副詞的功能, 修飾之後的形容詞。常用的有兩個: dead及awful (均譯成『非常地』)。

| 在Lesson 11中, 我們已提過在現在美語中, "so...that..."句構中的that常予以省略, 而用逗號取代, 或甚至連逗號都不用; 相同用法的句型尚有"such...that..."。因這兩種句型均是常見的用法, 故我們再複習如下: |

例: The runner was so exhausted after the race that he
almost fainted. = The runner was so exhausted after the race (,) he
almost fainted.
(那位跑者在跑完比賽後累得差點昏倒。)
Molly was so beautifully dressed that everyone was staring
at her.
= Molly was so beautifully dressed (,) everyone was
staring at her.
(茉莉穿得很漂亮，因而每個人都盯著她瞧。)
Rob is such a forgetful person that he often forgets to
bring his books to school.
= Rob is such a forgetful person (,) he often forgets to
bring his books to school.
(羅伯是個非常健忘的人，以致他上學經常忘了帶書本。)
