本課介紹獨立分詞片語的用法, 以及kind of作副詞, 表示『有一點』的用法, 另複習consider (視……為……) 作不完全及物動詞的用法。
1.

Frankly speaking, the pain is sometimes so unbearable (that) it's hard to even stand the weight of your own clothes on the scars.

坦白說, 這種疼痛難忍到有時連疤痕上衣服的重量也叫人無法忍受。

Generally speaking, most ordinary painkillers won't work.

一般說來, 一般的止痛藥大多無效。

上列句中, frankly speaking (坦白說) generally speaking (一般說來) 均為獨立分詞片語, 作副詞用, 修飾整個句子。
這些獨立分詞片語有副詞的功能
, 使用時通常置於句首, 其後加逗點, 用以修飾整個句子。常見的獨立分詞片語如下:

 frankly speaking  坦白說

 generally speaking  一般說來

 strictly speaking  嚴格說來

 judging from...  從……看來

 speaking of...  說/談到……

: Frankly speaking, I don't care if John doesn't come to my
  party.

  (坦白說,我並不在乎約翰是否會來參加我的派對。)

 

  Strictly speaking, you're not supposed to park here.

  (嚴格說來,你不應該把車子停在這裡。)

 

  Judging from the look on his face, the boss must have
  scolded him about his work.

It kind of short-circuits the pain.

這種藥膏可以稍微縮短疼痛的時間。

上列句中, kind of作副詞用, 表『有一點』、『有幾分』之意, 修飾其後的動詞short-circuits

kind of作副詞用時, 即等於sort ofa littlesomewhat, 除可修飾動詞外, 亦可修飾形容詞和副詞。

: Mr. Chen kind of takes things too seriously.

  (先生看待事情有點太過認真。)

  I was kind of sad to hear that my ex-girlfriend got married.

  (聽到前任女友結婚的消息我有點難過。)

  The boy from India spoke kind of strangely.

  (那個印度男孩講話有點奇怪。)

比較:

  a kind of...  一種……

  = a sort of...

 

注意:

a kind/sort of其後可接單、複數名詞或不可數名詞, a kind/sort of之後接的是單數名詞時, 則此單數名詞前不可再置不定冠詞a/an

 

: The villagers are suffering from a strange kind of a
  disease. (

 The villagers are suffering from a strange kind of
  disease. (
)

 (村民們罹患了一種怪病。)

 

 There is a kind of plastic which is as strong as steel.

 (有一種塑膠強度像鋼一樣。)

It's considered the newest, most creative and inexpensive way of dealing with the problem.

它被視為是處理這種問題最新、最富創意和便宜的方法。

上列句中, 使用了consider作不完全及物動詞的被動式用法, 其後接名詞the newest, most creative and inexpensive way作主詞補語。句型如下:

 be considered + 名詞/形容詞 (作主詞補語)  

 被視為……, 被認為是……

 

主動用法:

consider + 受詞 + 名詞/形容詞 (作受詞補語)  

視……為……, 認為……是……

: It is considered rude to interrupt others when they're
  talking.

 (打斷別人的談話被視為是不禮貌的。)

 

  I consider it worthwhile to spend more time reading.

  (我認為花多一點時間在閱讀上是值得的。)
